Solar is the upgrade that changes how you camp — and the 2026 menu has three honest tiers: weekend keeper $600–$2,000 · boondocking rig $3,000–$8,000 · full off-grid $10,000–$20,000+. The tier you need depends on one question: what do you refuse to give up when the hookups disappear?
| Tier | 2026 installed | What it runs |
|---|---|---|
| Weekend keeper 200W panel, 100Ah battery | $600 – $2,000 | Lights, fans, phones, fridge on propane — keeps batteries topped between hookups |
| Boondocking rig 400–600W, 200–300Ah lithium, 2kW inverter | $3,000 – $8,000 | Everything but AC and microwave, indefinitely in decent sun — the sweet spot for most owners |
| Full off-grid 800–1,200W+, 400–600Ah lithium, 3kW inverter, soft-start AC | $10,000 – $20,000+ | Residential fridge, microwave, and careful AC — the rig stops needing campgrounds at all |
The part nobody budgets: the battery is the system. Panels just refill it. Owners chronically overspend on watts of panel and underspend on amp-hours of lithium — if the budget forces a choice, buy battery first and add panels later.
Solar pairs naturally with a renovation — the walls are open anyway (see the renovation guide), and it sits at #2 on our upgrades ranking. For design-and-install, start the conversation with a studio in your area.

For everything except air conditioning: 400–600 watts of panels and 200–300Ah of lithium battery covers lights, fridge, water pump, fans, and device charging indefinitely in decent sun. That's the $3,000–$8,000 tier installed.
Only at the top tier: soft-start on the AC, 800–1,200+ watts of panels, 400–600Ah of lithium, and a 3,000W inverter — realistically $10,000–$20,000 installed. Even then you're running one AC unit, carefully. Most boondockers architect around shade and fans instead.
In 2026, almost always. Lithium prices have fallen to where the math is straightforward: double the usable capacity, a third of the weight, 5–10x the cycle life, and full-rate charging. Lead-acid only wins on day-one price for rigs that rarely leave hookups.
Roof penetrations, high-amperage DC, and battery placement are the three ways DIY solar goes expensively wrong — a bad roof entry can cost more than professional installation. Panels-and-wiring kits are DIY-friendly; system design and roof work reward a pro.
RV renovations run $5,000–$15,000 for cosmetic refreshes and $15,000–$40,000+ for full studio remodels in 2026.
